چکیده

The ferrihydrite-goethite transformation in samples of pureand Mn-ferrihydrite was investigated in order to elucidate the effect of Mn(II) in the aging process. Samples of pureand Mn-ferrihydrites were aged for different times, and their structural changes were described on the basis of Rietveld structure refinements. A comparison of two series of samples with (A-series) and without Mn (F-series) shows benlargement and aand cshortening due to the presence of Mn during the complete aging process. However, with aging different trends are observed in both the series. In the samples synthesized without Mn(II) the variations in all the unit-cell constants are virtually negligible, whereas in the series with Mn(II) more significant changes are reflected by the enlargement of aand cand the shortening of the b. These results confirm that the dimensions of the lattice parameters depend not only on the substitution ratio but also on the aging history of the sample.

Secondary mineralization pathways induced by dissimilatory iron reduction of ferrihydriteunder advective flow

Iron (hydr)oxides not only serve as potent sorbents and repositories for nutrients and contaminants but also provide a terminal electron acceptor for microbial respiration. The microbial reduction of Fe (hydr)oxides and the subsequent secondary solid-phase transformations will, therefore, have a profound influence on the biogeochemical cycling of Fe as well as associated metals. Here we elucida...

Uranium incorporation into aluminum-substituted ferrihydrite during iron(ii)-induced transformation.

Uranium retention processes (adsorption, precipitation, and incorporation into host minerals) exert strong controls on U mobility in the environment, and understanding U retention is therefore crucial for predicting the migration of U within surface and groundwater. Uranium can be incorporated into Fe (hydr)oxides during Fe(ii)-induced transformation of ferrihydrite to goethite. However, ferrih...

Control of Earth-like magnetic fields on the transformation of ferrihydrite to hematite and goethite

Hematite and goethite are the two most abundant iron oxides in natural environments. Their formation is controlled by multiple environmental factors; therefore, their relative concentration has been used widely to indicate climatic variations. In this study, we aimed to test whether hematite and goethite growth is influenced by ambient magnetic fields of Earth-like values. Ferrihydrite was aged...

Arsenate partitioning from ferrihydrite to hematite: Spectroscopic evidence

Despite the number of detailed studies on arsenate adsorption onto synthetic 2-line ferrihydrite carried out during the past few decades, questions remain regarding the fate of adsorbed arsenate during phase transformation of this poorly crystalline iron oxy-hydroxide. We assessed arsenate partitioning during this transformation by aging synthetic 2-line ferrihydrite with adsorbed arsenate (at ...

Transformation of 2-line ferrihydrite to 6-line ferrihydrite under oxic and anoxic conditions

Mineralogical transformations of 2-line ferrihydrite were studied under oxic and Fe-reducing conditions to establish the role, if any, of 6-line ferrihydrite (“well” organized ferrihydrite) in the reaction pathway and as a final product. In oxic experiments, concentrated suspensions (0.42 mol/L Fe in 0.1 mol/L NaClO4) of freshly synthesized 2-line ferrihydrite, with and without 3% Ni, were aged...
